This ceremonial version of the traditional weapon and tool is highly decorated and worn on special occasions, like wedding ceremony by the bridegroom in typical Nepali national dress or part of celebrations such as retirement from a Gurkha regiment of the British Army.
The kukri, synonymous with Gurkhas, is part of a Gurkhas' armoury, although, nowadays is less likely to be used in battle, as many other modern weapons are at a soldier's disposal.
In Nepal it is a common household tool, used for a variety of tasks from chopping wood, carving, and agricultural purposes.
There is also a significance and association to the Kukri within the Hindu religion the knife is often blessed during the Dashain festival.
